Flexible Library Project

The brief was to design the library for l'Ecole Supérieure d'Art et Design Le Havre Rouen within it's new campus building situated in a residential area of the city. The campus was undergoing construction ready for the school to open in September 2014. This new location would be the opportunity to change practicies in a school library becoming a more flexible tool.

From April to July 2014, a research module, composed of students and a librarian, explored the situation's issues (in a practical but also a utopian way). After visits and exchanges, and during three days of workshops, six students from the University of the Creative Arts Canterbury and three students from ESADHaR worked together to create a design proposal for the layout and organisation of the new library (using analogical tools, found furnitures and equipment) as well as conceptional ideas for the library to integrate into its new surroundings.

Il s'agissait de concevoir la bibliothèque de l’École Supérieure d'Art et Design Le Havre Rouen au sein du nouvel édifice de ce campus (situé dans une zone d'habitations de la ville), dans un bâtiment alors encore en travaux, avant son ouverture en Septembre 2014. L'installation sur ce nouveau site serait l'occasion de changer les pratiques d'une bibliothèque d'établissement devenant un outil plus flexible.

D'avril à juillet 2014, un module de recherche composé d'étudiants et d'une bibliothécaire ont exploré les enjeux de cette situation (de manière pratique mais aussi utopique). Au terme de visites et d'échanges, durant trois jours de workshops, six étudiants de la University of the Creative Arts Canterbury et trois étudiants de l'ESADHaR ont travaillé ensemble à une proposition d'aménagement et d'organisation de la nouvelle bibliothèque, à l'aide d'outils analogiques, de meubles et d'équipements trouvés sur place), mais aussi d'idées permettant à la bibliothèque d'intégrer son nouvel environnement.
